You echo many of my own mixed feelings about the metaphor of Christmas lights, i.e. our changing cultural taste. I wish more people knew about the origins of many of our Christmas traditions & how they evolved from earlier times when nature had significant impact on lives. Still has for many. It's easy to see how Light in the form of the sun became a source of worship.
I can excuse the gaudiness of Christmas lights. They continue to fill me with warmth & hope.

It’s nice to have a little more light during the darkest time of the year.
We would pile into the car and go on “light rides” during the season.
Green and blue led lights are the worst.
